This is part 4 of a 5-part series about Ibrahim’s journey to the United States.
After 15 long years of waiting, four interviews, and countless setbacks, Ibrahim had nearly given up on his Special Immigrant Visa.
It was his patient and supportive wife, whom he met in Indonesia where he had sought refuge after fleeing Iraq, who convinced him to try one more time.
So he returned to Iraq, risking his safety once again, to renew his documents. For months, he waited in fear and isolation, unable to work, unable to tell anyone he was back.
“I felt like a stranger in my own country.”
But then, 40 days after his interview, something finally changed: his visa was approved!
March 15 is a date he’ll never forget. One of the best days of his life.
He rushed back to Indonesia, to his wife and young son, unclear what would come next but knowing he was one step closer to safety and building a future together.
At No One Left Behind, we know that behind every visa is a story of sacrifice and service.
