More than 9,500 Afghan nationals have been approved for TPS, which authorizes them to work in the United States and protects them from removal given the extraordinary danger they would face if returned to Afghanistan.

Secretary Noem reportedly decided to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Afghanistan on March 21, 2025. As of April 14, that decision has not been published in the Federal Register. The current TPS protections for Afghans expire May 20, 2025.

TPS is critical for our Afghan allies evacuated during the fall of Afghanistan who are still in processing for their Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) status. Many of these allies completed the requisite substantial and valuable service to U.S. national security, yet are still in processing for an SIV because of documents and connections lost in the chaos of the U.S. withdrawal.

TPS provides a layer of stability for these vulnerable allies in recognition that returning Afghan allies to Afghanistan under the current regime would be a deadly failure to keep our promise. That protection will remain critical beyond May 20, and this decision throws our allies into harmful uncertainty.

Congress needs to hear from you – their constituent – that you support the redesignation of TPS for Afghanistan because of the dangers our allies face in Afghanistan!

Call Your Representative and Senators:

Please note, interns and junior staff often manage the phones. The call is still an important tool to show your support for our Afghan allies. The most effective message is calm, clear, and includes your name and zip code so that the team can pass your message on to the Representative or Senator.

Hello! My name is [XXX-Insert Your Name-XXX], and I am your constituent in [XXX-Insert Your City and Zip Code-XXX].

I am calling to ask Representative/Senator [XXX- Insert the Member’s Name-XXX] to recognize the extraordinary dangers our allies face if they are returned to Afghanistan by supporting the redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan.

TPS is a temporary protection to allow vulnerable Afghans already in the United States to work legally and contribute to American prosperity while conditions in Afghanistan make a their safe return impossible. As your constituent, can I count on my Representative/Senator to urge Secretary Noem to continue this lifesaving status for Afghans by redesignating TPS for Afghanistan? [Note: Whether they can commit to an answer or not, remain clear and respectful.]

Thank you for sharing my message with the Representative/Senator.

[Optional - If you would like a written response] I would also like to request a written response on the Representative’s position on these measures. My email address is [XXX- Insert Your Email Address -XXX]. Thank you.
